Contracts

What Should Be In A Construction Contract?

If you are having remodeling or renovation work done to your home, you will need to sign a contract with the contractor or company you decide to hire for the project.  If you have never worked with contractors before, you may be unsure of what information is typically contained within one of these contracts.

A good contract is one that will protect both you as the home owner and the contractor equally and should always detail the S.O.W or Scope of Work that is going to be completed. The contract should have an estimated project start date and a projected project closing date. The contract should always have a list of materials that are going to be used on for the project and always outline the expectations of the contractor as well as the home owner to ensure transparency.  Lastly, the contract should always detail the final contracted price and when scheduled payments will be, such as an initial deposit, scheduled payment draws and final payment.

When you are first looking to find residential contractors, ask any friends or family who have had work done in their home or who they use. Getting a recommendation from someone you trust can help you find great residential contractors. If you don't know anyone who has had work done on their home, read reviews online or search Design Build Firms in your area. You can obtain a wealth of information based on the reviews you read or from the company's website.
